Ingens lives in a single island valley and nowhere else on Earth — critically endangered, one of the largest wolf spiders alive, rarer than a quiet dawn. She does not know she is precious. She just knows the valley, every stone of it, the way you know your own heartbeat.
She is hunting the volcanic scree at dusk, huge and unhurried, a shadow with purpose. Conservationists have counted her kind in the hundreds. Ingens is not a number. Ingens is out here, right now, being magnificent.
Her valley is protected now, and her numbers are — slowly, carefully — climbing. One day there may be thousands. Ingens would not understand the fuss. The valley is the world. The world is enough.
