The story so far
Diplocaulus magnicornis — the Permian's boomerang-head amphibian, a wide crescent skull on a salamander body, possibly a hydrofoil that slid them sideways out of predators' jaws 270 million years ago. Boomerang has made a philosophy of the skull: what throws you can also bring you back. In the Undertow they are the Empty Sky's returner — the one sent to the far halls, the deep currents, the places nobody returns from, who returns anyway, usually with something interesting and always with the story. They have never once stayed gone. 'The trick,' they say, tapping the crescent, 'is to be shaped like coming back.' They are the faction's proof that leaving and returning are the same motion.
