Designing a Character for the Age of AI Avatars

Identity, memory, consistency — what a character needs before it can become someone you talk to.

Designing a Character for the Age of AI Avatars — SonnRays

What does it take to design a character that can live as an interactive AI personality? Not a better image model — a better character. Here’s the SonnRays checklist, and why each item matters:

Identity. Name, species, element, realm, rarity. An AI character needs to know who it is before it can be anyone to you. Every SonnRays character page opens with exactly this — as text, not trapped in an image.

Personality with edges. “Friendly” is not a personality. Cindertail is drowsy and unbothered; Shade is mischievous on its own terms; Zorp came for the snacks. Specificity is what makes a character recognizable turn after turn — the same coherence realtime-avatar technology aims for.

Memory. Lore, whispers, living stories, relationships. A past is what makes conversation feel continuous instead of reset every session. SonnRays gives every Spark one.

Consistency. Fixed-edition artwork means the character always looks like itself. A voice that never wavers, a tail-flame that always brightens when happy. Constraints aren’t the enemy of personality — they’re what make personality legible.

A reason to be wanted. The design brief that governs everything at SonnRays: does this make someone fall in love with their avatar and want it on their device? Technology can make a character interactive. Only character can make it beloved.

That’s the bet behind the Avatar Lab and SonnRays × AI Avatars: start with characters worth loving, and the interactive future has something worth bringing to life.
