The Ember That Would Not Go Out

An old Ember Isles tale about the smallest hatchling, one coal, and the Long Dark — and the question the tale refuses to answer.

The Ember That Would Not Go Out — SonnRays

The old ones of the Ember Isles tell it best, which is to say they tell it the way a coal burns: slow, warm, and refusing to go out.

Once, the volcanoes slept. The tale calls it the Long Dark, a season when the mountains went quiet and every fire-folk banked their coals and waited. Ashwing was brooding her clutch, and she taught her hatchlings the old trick: carry one coal, keep it breathing, never set it down for long.

Cindertail was the smallest of the clutch. He chose the smallest coal. The old Ethiopian saying goes, little by little, the egg will walk — and little by little, the smallest hatchling walked, carrying his coal everywhere he went. He napped with it. He warmed his toes on it. When the other hatchlings’ coals guttered in the deep dark, he shared his warmth one breath at a time, no more than he could spare — which turned out to be exactly enough.

Then the volcanoes woke, the way volcanoes do: all at once and without apology. Every fire-folk relit from the mountains. Every fire-folk except one small dragon, whose coal was still burning — and had never gone out, not once, the entire Long Dark.

“Why did his last?” the young ones always ask, and the old ones always smile the same smile. “Because he never set it down to admire it,” they say. “He just kept it breathing.”

That is the tale. Here is the part it refuses to explain: the ember in Cindertail’s tail is still that coal. Terratort listens to it the way you would listen to a door you cannot open, and the ember has never once beaten in time with Cindertail’s heart — not in the Long Dark, not since. The tale ends there every time, with the old ones smiling like people who know the next page and have agreed not to read it aloud.

So the question sits where the tale left it, warm as a banked coal: what is the ember listening for? The volcanoes, asked directly, decline to comment. Cindertail, asked directly, is asleep.
