“The Midnight says the Sound is a lure with no fish attached — a lamp burning in the deep with nothing holding it. The anglerfish have checked their own lures. All present. All burning.”
The Midnight's theory: a lure with no fish.

In the Midnight, every anglerfish holds a territory of dark around its living lamp, and the Black Seadevil holds the finest. Her lure glows with living bacteria she does not own — she farms light the way the Abyss farms chemistry. Her mate is fused to her flank, a tiny permanent passenger, sharing her bloodstream.
She patrols her sovereign dark with the esca swaying, and by the Treaty of the Lure no one may touch another's glow. The Midnight's young anglers study her lamp the way apprentices study a master's forge.
The bacteria in her lure are evolving faster than she is. One generation soon, the light may want something in return. The Seadevil has never considered the price of borrowed fire — she is about to.

“The Joined was seen cruising the treaty line with its esca dark — lure out, unlit, for the first time anyone can remember. A seadevil's light is sovereign ground. A dark lure is either mourning, or a message.”
A dark lure on the treaty line. Mourning, or message?
No sunlight has ever reached here. Anglerfish hold solitary lure-territories under the Treaty of the Lure: a light is sovereign ground, and stealing another’s glow is war.
