It grows armor out of poison: the Scaly-Foot Snail mineralizes its own foot scales with iron sulfide — pyrite and greigite, fool's gold turned real. It is the only animal known to wear metal, and it wears it at the edge of boiling water.
It holds the chimney's hot flank for the Vent Compact, iron scales gleaming in the vent glow. The armorers' quarter is named for it; every young snail in the Abyss dreams of a plating half as fine.
Iron sulfide is only the beginning. The vent's chemistry holds other metals, and the Snail's grandchildren are already experimenting. The Abyss's first knight may found a whole armory.
