Nothing Made Up: The Real Superpowers of INSTAR
Every INSTAR character is a real, documented insect superpower. Earth did the imagining first.
Here is the strangest rule in all of SonnRays, and it belongs to INSTAR: nothing is made up. Every character in the Molten Garden is anchored to a real, documented insect superpower. No invented powers. No invented anatomy. Earth’s insects were born with abilities stranger than any story — INSTAR just gives them a Garden to live in.
Consider the artillery. The Bombardier Beetle fires boiling chemical spray — 100°C, in machine-gun pops — from a combustion chamber in its own abdomen. Real bombardiers do this. INSTAR’s charter merely notes, in his handwriting: do not startle him.
Consider the interrogator. The Emerald Jewel Wasp stings a cockroach’s brain and rewires it into an obedient zombie, then walks it home by the antenna. Real jewel wasps do this. INSTAR only gave her an office.
Consider the navigator. The Dung Beetle steers by the Milky Way — the only insect known to navigate by the galaxy — while rolling a ball 1,141 times its body weight. Real dung beetles do this. INSTAR only gave him night shifts.
The catalog runs the length of the Garden: the Hercules Beetle lifting 850 times his weight. The mantis strike landing in a twentieth of a second. The Firefly’s cold light burning at 96% efficiency — no heat, no waste. The Luna Moth, which never eats as an adult and lives a single moon beautifully anyway. The Peppered Moth, in whom scientists watched evolution happen in real time. The Tarantula Hawk, whose sting tops the pain index. The Velvet Ant — a flightless wasp in armor so tough it is nearly indestructible, which squeaks when grabbed.
Even the impossible ones inherit instead of inventing. The four Chimeras braid exactly two real bloodlines each — a fire-seeking jewel beetle’s infrared pits crossed with a sunset moth’s pigment-free iridescence (Gilded Sphinx), a mantis strike crossed with an orchid bee’s perfume hoard (Petalsting). Two powers in, zero powers invented.
Only the Firstbrood stand outside the law — Prime Molt, Shed Crown, Instar Zero, Pupa Eterna, the first sheddings of the Last Instar itself. They are exempt as mythic molts: mysterious by design, never explained, never solved.
That is the INSTAR thesis, and it is the reason the universe works as avatars: nobody had to imagine these characters into being interesting. They arrived interesting. The Garden just gave them gates to hold, vaults to guard, duels to fight — and a sky made from a molt, to remind them that growing stranger is the oldest law there is.
